The Importance of Oil Changes for Vehicle Longevity

Hi-Tech Auto Specialists understands the importance of keeping your vehicle's oil fresh and clean. Few maintenance jobs have a higher priority. In contrast to a DIY oil change, when Hi-Tech Auto Specialists changes your oil, you can be sure experts are doing it and that your used oil will be disposed of properly.

How Old Changes Keep Your Engine Running Longer

Regularly changing your oil as part of your vehicle maintenance schedule keeps your engine performing optimally and extends its life. Here are a few of the benefits of replacing your engine oil:

  • Lubrication:  Engine parts move at high speeds in close quarters. Fresh motor oil reduces friction between these moving parts, which prevents overheating and reduces wear.
  • Cleaning:  As oil circulates through the engine, it picks up dirt and metal particles. Over time, your oil filter can become clogged, and the oil can degrade and turn into sludge that doesn’t work effectively. Regular oil changes eliminate dirty oil and filters before they can damage your engine.
  • Cooling:  By reducing friction, fresh oil lowers your engine’s temperature. Parts that aren’t properly lubricated can create excess heat that can cause severe engine damage.
  • Efficiency and performance: Clean oil allows your engine to run more smoothly and efficiently, resulting in better fuel economy and more responsive engine performance.
  • Higher resale value:  According to the Kelley Blue Book, regular preventative maintenance on your vehicle will increase its value. At Hi-Tech Auto Specialists, we keep records of your oil changes, so you’ll have proof you’ve taken good care of your vehicle when it’s time to sell.

Types of Oil

There are many different types of oil, so you wonder which is the recommended oil type for your vehicle. There are several to find out.

In many vehicles, a sticker under the hood tells you what type of oil to use. You can also check your owner’s manual (many are available online if you don’t have a physical copy).

Hi-Tech Auto Specialists’s experts are also happy to help you determine which oil to use. The different types of oil include:

  • Conventional oil:  This is standard motor oil derived directly from crude oil. It’s the least expensive option, but you’ll need to change it more frequently since it breaks down faster than synthetic oils.
  • Synthetic oil:  Synthetic motor oil is chemically engineered to provide superior performance in terms of viscosity, resistance to breakdown, and ability to function in extreme temperatures. Synthetic oil lasts longer and protects your engine better than conventional oil.
  • Synthetic blend oil:  This oil combines synthetic and conventional motor oils and has some of the advantages of synthetic oil at a lower cost. It’s a good compromise for many drivers.
  • High-mileage oil:  Designed for vehicles with over 75,000 miles on the odometer, high-mileage oil contains special additives to help reduce oil burn-off and leaks. It can improve the quality of aging engine seals and minimize wear and tear.

Warning Signs You Need an Oil Change

Ideally, you’ll never experience any signs that your oil needs to be changed. Following a routine maintenance checklist means your oil will be changed before it starts to degrade.

However, if you notice any of the following, take your car to Hi-Tech Auto Specialists immediately for an oil change and evaluation:

  1. Oil change light or check engine light:  Most modern vehicles have an oil life monitoring indicator light that tells you when it’s time for a change. If the check engine light comes on, it’s also a good idea to check the oil quality and level.
  2. Dark oil:  Clean oil is usually amber and transparent. Oil darkens and fills with particles that can turn it almost black as it gets used. If you check your oil dipstick and the oil is dark and dirty, take it to Hi-Tech Auto Specialists for an oil change.
  3. Loud engine noise or knocking: Oil lubrication prevents engine parts from rubbing together. If the oil is old or low, you might hear increased engine noise or even knocking sounds because the parts aren’t properly lubricated.
  4. Oil smell inside the vehicle:  If you smell oil inside the vehicle's cabin, you may have an oil leak. Leaking oil can burn and produce a noticeable smell or smoke under the hood.
  5. Exhaust smoke:  Thick smoke from your exhaust pipe can indicate an oil leak burning off in the engine compartment or oil entering the combustion chamber.
  6. Low oil level:  If you check your oil dipstick and it’s low, your oil may need to be changed, or you may have a leak. Either way, Hi-Tech Auto Specialists can help.
  7. Overheated engine:  Oil helps to keep your engine cooler throughout the lubrication system, so overheating could be due to old or insufficient oil capacity.
  8. Heavy mileage:  If you have traveled a lot recently, be aware that most vehicles should have their oil changed every 3,000 miles or three months. New vehicles usually require a change of oil every 6,000 miles or six months
